The Jefferson tree committee will plant 104 trees with the help of Greene County students, an event that has taken place most years recently.
Greene County eighth graders with teacher Conner Mueller will help plant on Tuesday, April 23, starting around 9 am and continuing throughout the day. High school instructor Raelyn Harris will bring students on Thursday morning, April 25.
Six trees will be planted at the disc golf course at Daubendiek Park; the remaining 98 will be planted along Jefferson’s Cedar Street, beginning at the south end. The trees to be planted include swamp white oak, sycamore, redbud, hackberry, linden, and Kentucky coffee trees. They were purchased with grants from Alliant Energy and the Iowa Department of Natural Resources.
They will help replace diseased trees removed by the city crew. As of March 11, 450 ash trees had been removed by City crews, who estimated they had another 150 to go.
